Liverpool miss out on £10 million England international

Liverpool's chances of signing Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson have today ended after the player signed a new four-and-a-half year deal at the club. Before signing the new deal, the England international had been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, with Rafa Benitez reportedly keen to bring him to Merseyside.

Portsmouth have let go of Lassana Diarra (to Real Madrid) and Jermain Defoe (to Tottenham) in recent weeks and it was thought that Johnson may of been next to head for the exit door at Fratton Park. However, the 24-year old has decided to pledge his future to Pompey, much to the delight of Tony Adams.

Portsmouth boss, Adams has this to say : "I am delighted to have him here. I want him here for a long time ... Glen has applied himself very well - he has been very good for this club and this club has been very good for him."

Although I think Johnson would of been a terrific signing for Liverpool, I am thrilled to see he is staying with Pompey. The club have let go of several big name players in recent weeks (as mentioned) and it was vital that they didn't let any more go. Johnson is, without doubt, one of the best right-back's in the country and I am sure Pompey fans will be delighted to see him staying with the club.

Johnson would be a cracking signing for your team at £4.5 million. Yes he costs just that in this season's "You the Manager" so follow the link below this post to enter your team.

Just to let you all know, we have been running a poll on the site in recent days asking you where you though Johnson would be when the transfer window closes. The poll was quite one sided with Portsmouth grabbing the majority of the votes and with Johnson now signing a new deal at the club, it gives us an opportunity to start a new poll. The new poll asks you : Will Manchester City break the world record transfer fee for a player in January? Get voting (top right of the site).
