Villa and City chase £13 million United striker

According to today's Independent, Aston Villa and Manchester City have made formal inquiries to Newcastle United about the availability of Obafemi Martins.

The 23-year old has had an inconsistent start to this season and he is reportedly unhappy playing under current Magpies boss Sam Allardyce.

The Nigerian international has a £13 million release clause in his contract and it is believed Villa are willing to meet that valuation although Martins would prefer a move to City.

Both Villa and City are understood to be in the market for a new striker and Martins is believed to be high on both Sven Goran Eriksson and Martin O'Neill's wish list.

Martins is a quality striker with bags of pace and it is clear that this season he hasn't showing his best form. I feel a move would be the best option for him at this time but who he moves to is a different question.

I'm a Newcastle fan and I say let him go. £13M for a player who cant trap a ball or read the game seems good money. I know he scored 19 goals last season, a feat he will never repeat.

I agree, let him go. I am a Newcastle supporter and I think this player is very rough. He has nor eye for goal. There is a difference between hitting and hoping and purposefully placing a ball. Martins does the former. I completely agree, he cannot read a game at all. That would be a coup for Newcastle, 3 million in an initial investment of 10. We could then use this for more investments.
