Rafa steps up interest in £4 million defender

According to today's Guardian, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is closing in on the signing of Zenit St Petersburg centre-back Martin Skrtel.

The Slovakian defender is believed to be worth around about the £4 million mark and Benitez reported to be very keen on the player and looking to wrap up a deal within the next week.

The 23-year old has made over 60 appearances for Zenit since joining them back in 2003. There is no doubt Benitez is on the look out for a new defender and Skrtel seems to be his man.

I personally don't know much about Skrtel but with the previous signings by Benitez in this particular position all failing, it begs the question, how will Skrtel do? I just hope for Liverpool's sake that this signing doesn't turn out to be another Pellegrino!

Well, in my opinion at least, Daniel Agger has proven to be a great piece of business by Benitez and if im not mistaken, he actually plays as a center back....

Get your facts straight before you start slating Rafa.

Arbeloa is also a LB who plays CB in Spain and he was a super success.

Except for Morientes (Gonzalez was 3.6 and Bellamy is an ok player). All players that Rafa signed 4 million and above turned out to be good players.

How has Rafa failed in terms of defensive signings? Daniel Agger is probably the best young defender out there. You just can't get anyone as good at his age. He's changed Carragher from his full-back position to a centre-back, and I just can't tell you how much that move proved successful. Arbeloa completely anhilated Messi's threat in the CL last season and has been a huge revelation this year and finally, Jack Hobbs looks like an extremely promising defender. The only failures were Palletta and Pellegrino, but well, they hardly cost anything and Pellegrino played a huge part in teaching our defenders zonal marking.

Arbeloa is a decent player, but should not be a first team player, he makes far too many mistakes

its absolutely disgusting how the media, has rallied against rafa benitez. I think I understand why some and most would be upset, but its childish in their attempt to make every possible turn rafa and liverpool make as uneasy as possible. Rafa's been at the helm 3-4 years not nearly enuff to compete with the likes of Sir Alex, Arsen and Chelsea's outrageous spending power. I believe that rafa has made a few critical errors in terms of the entertainment factor the football is to the world and the media, ie leaving torres out of the squad a couple times, which i think he's entitled to do considering how manu, chelsea and arsenal have done in the past (henry, ronaldo in his early yrs; chelsea with balack a proven champion) and look at the fruits of letting them taste the bench for a bit. This season liverpool promised to be the uprising premier league force that the world was waiting for, by leaving big name players that would light up games and score goals against lesser teams, especially when failing, left bitter tastes in the media's mouth. Lets stop being childish, rafa has to get used to the premierleague, the only way he can do that is to stay right where is is. END OF.
